Heartland Japan Launches New Winter Tours in Tohoku Region

Winter Tours in Tohoku

We are excited to announce the launch of our new winter tour packages in the Tohoku region of northern Japan. These carefully curated journeys offer travelers an authentic experience of Japan's snowy landscapes, traditional festivals, and warm hospitality.

Discover the Winter Wonderland of Tohoku

The Tohoku region, comprising six prefectures in northeastern Honshu, transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland from December through March. Heavy snowfall creates stunning scenery, from snow-covered hot spring villages to frozen waterfalls and pristine mountain landscapes.

Our new tours include visits to the famous Yokote Kamakura Snow Festival, where hundreds of igloo-like snow houses illuminate the night, and the Zao Snow Monsters — naturally formed ice-covered trees that create an otherworldly landscape.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit traditional thatched-roof farmhouses in Ouchi-juku, Fukushima
  • Experience onsen (hot springs) in snow-covered mountain settings
  • Attend the Yokote Kamakura and Hirosaki Snow Lantern festivals
  • Explore the Zao Snow Monsters with a local mountain guide
  • Taste regional winter specialties including kiritanpo nabe and wanko soba

Community-Focused Travel

As with all Heartland Japan tours, these winter journeys emphasize meaningful connections with local communities. Travelers will stay in family-run ryokan and minshuku, participate in traditional craft workshops, and share meals with local residents.

"Winter in Tohoku reveals a side of Japan that few international visitors experience. The warmth of the people contrasts beautifully with the cold landscapes."

— Keijiro Sawano, CEO of Heartland Japan

Tours are available from December 2025 through March 2026. Group sizes are limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate and personalized experience.
