Walking Kyoto's Circuit Trail: The Fushimi–Fukakusa Route

Fushimi Fukakusa Route

The Kyoto Circuit Trail (京都一周トレイル) is one of Japan's best-kept walking secrets — a 83.3km route that encircles the ancient capital through forested mountains, hidden shrines, and quiet neighborhoods that few tourists ever see.

The Fushimi–Fukakusa section offers a unique perspective on southern Kyoto, weaving through bamboo groves, past centuries-old stone markers, and along ridge lines that overlook the sprawling city below.

Starting Point: Fushimi Inari's Back Trails

While millions of tourists crowd the famous torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha, the Circuit Trail takes you behind the shrine complex and into the mountains. Within minutes, the crowds disappear and you're surrounded by ancient cedar forests and the sound of birds.

The path is well-marked with the distinctive Circuit Trail signposts — wooden markers numbered sequentially that guide you along the entire route. Even without a map, following the numbered markers makes navigation straightforward.

Through the Bamboo Groves of Fukakusa

The Fukakusa section of the trail passes through dense bamboo forests that rival the famous Arashiyama grove — but without a single other tourist in sight. The rustling of bamboo in the wind creates a natural soundtrack that ancient poets described as the "voice of the forest."

Local residents maintain small shrines and rest areas along the trail, a testament to the community's connection with these mountain paths that have served as thoroughfares for centuries.
